History of Technopolis
Athens Gas Works, which now serves as the building for the Technopolis, was founded in 1857. Five years later it was put into operation for the first time and thereafter provided Athens with energy and light for almost 130 years.
After a new plant was put into operation in Aspropyrgos in 1984, the gas plant that gave its name to the Gasi district of Athens, in which it is located, was closed down. A few years later, the state acquired the entire site of the gasworks and had it converted into a venue. The old buildings were preserved.
In order to present and protect the history of the old Athens gasworks, the Industrial and Gas Museum opened its doors in 2013.
In addition to the museum, the cultural center impresses with around 900 events a year. Around a million people visit the Technopolis every year.
