History of the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art

The Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art was founded by the art-loving couple Basil and Elise Goulandris. In addition to their museum for contemporary art, founded in 1979 on Andros, the two have for decades harbored the desire to open a museum of this kind in Athens in order to make contemporary art accessible to an even larger audience.

After years of searching for a suitable location, construction of the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art finally began in August 2012 in the Pangrati district, about 800 meters from Syntagma Square.

The 11-storey building was completed in 2018 and officially opened by Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on October 1, 2019. The private collection of the Greek couple, an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, has been presented in the exhibition rooms ever since.

The Balis & Elise Goulandiris Foundation's Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art is a must for all art lovers.
