Athens Restaurant Guide for Foodies: Where & What to Eat

Find our recommendations of restaurants, cafes and typical Greek food below.

What Can I Eat in Athens?

Tatsiki, saganaki, the breaded hard cheese, souvlaki and moussaka as well as feta, ouzo and Greek wine are first thoughts. But what else is there?

Athens from Feta to Wine

Traditional to Vegan, Kosher and Halal. Athens's cuisine can do it all.

Trendy restaurants, cafes and small eateries now abound in the capital.

A trip to Athens can easily be combined with a gourmet tour of the best restaurants, a food tour of the scene neighborhoods of Athens or classic traditional eateries.

Tsatsiki, souvlaki and retsina, the resinous Greek wine, are as much a part of Athens as a visit to one of the many eateries in the Old Town or a taverna in Plaka where sirtaki is danced.

Dishes from India, Italy or Mexico are now just as much a part of the daily fare.

The Right Part of Town

  • Good home cooking with classic Athenian dishes? Typical Athenian restaurants can be found in every neighborhood.
  • Inexpensive international cuisine? A detour to side streets away from the tourist hustle and bustle is always worthwhile.
  • Greek taverns? Plaka, "To Kafeneio", "Anafiotika" and "O geros tou Moira" are particularly recommended.
  • Indian, Chinese, Asian? Around Syntagma Square there are many restaurants, also in Ambelokipi you can find some alternatives.
  • Mexican? In Syntagma and Filadelfima there is a wide choice, "Agavita" in Filadelfima is very popular.
  • Italian? There are many Italian restaurants in the Palaio Faliro area, including "Da Bruno" and "Alpino," which scores with its homemade pasta.
  • Hebrew or Halal? "Gostijo" in Psirri is a kosher restaurant and "Tarka Athens" in Syntagma Square does halal cooking.
  • Turkish? There's that in Athens, too. "Barbaleksis" in Nea Filadelfia serves kebab and kebab, "Peran" is also worth mentioning.
